Recently for my quiet time I experimented with reading
the first few verse in each chapter in the book of Romans. I love this book of doctrinal
truth. It was awesome how reading the first few verses gave me an overview of
these truths at a glance. It meant so much to me that I thought you might be
encouraged by it too. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your mind as you read
these verses. I hope you enjoy Romans at a glance.
1: 1 Paul,
a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel
of God— 2 the
gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding
his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4 and
who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the
Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus
Christ our Lord. 5 Through
him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people
from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. 6 And
you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
2: 1 You,
therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at
whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you
who pass judgment do the same things.
3:1 What
advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in
circumcision? 2 Much
in every way! First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of
God.3 What
if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God’s
faithfulness? 4 Not
at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar.
4:1 What
then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter? 2 If,
in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but
not before God. 3 What
does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as
righteousness.”
5: 1 Therefore,
since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our
Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through
whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And
we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
6: 1 What
shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By
no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or
don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into his death? 4 We
were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just
as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may
live a new life.
7: 1 Do
you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to men who know the law—that the law
has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
8: 1 Therefore,
there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because
through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of
sin and death.
9: 1 I
speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy
Spirit— 2 I
have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For
I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of
my brothers, those of my own race, 4 the
people of Israel.
10: 1 Brothers,
my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be
saved. 2 For
I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not
based on knowledge. 3 Since
they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish
their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4 Christ
is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
11: 1 I
ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a
descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
12: 1 Therefore,
I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living
sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do
not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind.
13: 1 Everyone
must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority
except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been
established by God.
14: 1 Accept
him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. 2 One
man’s faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak,
eats only vegetables. 3 The
man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who
does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted
him. 4 Who
are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls.
And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
15: 1 We
who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please
ourselves.
16: 17 I
urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles
in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from
them. 18 For
such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth
talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people…. 25 Now
to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus
Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but
now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of
the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him— 27 to
the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
